Is The US Falling Behind The Rest Of The World In Using Renewable Sources Of Energy?
If you live in the United States, you probably have a distorted view of what is going on in other parts of the world, particularly on environmental issues. Elsewhere, the great majority of other countries are working to meet the challenge by utilizing various types of renewable energy.
It is hard to even fathom what is needed, energy-wise, to power the whole world, and simply trying to picture it, is difficult because of its sheer volume. It is interesting to hear some of the leaders, and their green thinking, now that environmental issues have been brought out in the open. There are a couple of positive signs - for instance, the most recent governor of California drove a hybrid Hummer. Not only did Schwarzenegger drive a hybrid, but he passed a three billion dollar solar energy program, making him one of the greenest leaders out there. However when it concerns energy issues, the federal government has been doing a horrible job, particularly the Bush administration, and their ties to big oil. They had a hard time even admitting there was even a problem, much less doing anything about it. This appears to give many folks the idea that things are the same in the rest of the world, but nothing could be further from the truth. It's simply that the US chooses not to participate. In Victoria, Australia, they have committed to use renewable sources for 60 percent of all of its energy by the year 2016. Imagine what a huge difference that would make in this country. In Germany, they lead the world in the utilization of both wind energy and solar energy. Germany plans are to have renewable energy as the source for 20 percent of their whole energy supply by 2020. In Norway, they already use NO petroleum to fill their energy requirements; instead they use 99% renewable resources. It has no crude oil imports, and exports virtually all of its resources in oil, making it the world's third largest exporter. Brazil may have fascinating political situations, but it has become South America's clean energy giant. Ethanol is used for nearly all of the transportation requirements in Brazil, with their goal being to soon run everything completely on ethanol. Ethanol is a biofuel that is made from sugar cane, and it costs about half of a gallon made from oil. the US could save over 2 trillion dollars a year simply by this one simple step. Those are just a couple of examples of the strides being made in the rest of the world to clean up our planet. Here in the US, we are the largest burner of fossil fuels, and give out far and away the most so-called greenhouse gases. The world can keep on doing their part, but without the people in the US doing their part, the process will never be complete. As long as we continue to keep our eyes closed and go our own filthy way, the world will stay unclean. Green Living is one area everyone should be interested in.
